Patience Is Bittersweet: A Q&A With Kirk Jones Of Royal Rose Syrups

There are a lot of cocktail syrups on the market these days and unfortunately they’re not all created equal. We discovered Royal Rose Syrups in 2019 and they’ve been our go-to ever since. They make flavors for every palate, ranging from classic simple syrup to unique and exciting flavors like Organic Strawberry Fennel and Organic Hot Ginger Lime.

We were so pleased when Royal Rose’s Kirk Jones agreed to chat with us about his connections to the world of cocktails and how he’s learned to thrive during a pandemic.

Be sure to check out the Bitter Sweetheart Highball Kirk made for us live on Highballs at High Noon and watch his live session with Mary on Instagram!

Q: What was it that first got you into cocktails?

Kirk Jones: Having dinner at our favorite place and ordering the same cocktail over and over again. I finally said, “I need to make this at home.” It was a Dark N' Stormy… know where I can find some good ginger beer? [laughing]

Q: What new cocktail discoveries are you exploring right now?

KJ: Just purchased my first bottle of aquavit. SO funky!

Q: Why do you think people at home may be intimidated by making cocktails?

KJ: Lack of ingredients and process. Start with something you enjoy drinking and learn how to make it. It's easier than you think!

Q: What are some of your favorite cocktails to make at home?

KJ: Manhattan. I like a strong drink without too many ingredients. After that, Old Fashioned.

Q: What do you take to a party?

KJ: A batched cocktail. Nothing more, nothing less.

Q: Where do you think the cocktail and bar industry is going?

KJ: I think we're in an interesting spot. Craft beer and craft cocktails are battling for the craft crown. With more people making cocktails at home, they have a better understanding of the preparation and dedication that goes into a craft cocktail and will treat bartenders better in the future. I also think, with home bartenders catching up, it will push mixology to the next level!

Q: What has the pandemic taught you?

KJ: You don't need to have fun to drink! Jokes aside: patience. We all want something today, and if we can't have it we get upset. Choose to focus on what you have and things you can control. Your days will be much brighter this way!
